Homecoming St. John's College Annapolis 2024

St. John’s College invites our alumni and their partners to return to campus for Annapolis Homecoming 2024. Renew your bond with fellow Johnnies around the seminar table, soccer field, or over lunch in the Temple Iglehart gym. Reconnect with friends, classmates, and faculty on our historic grounds with a shared reading of The Bacchae by Euripides.

Our Homecoming 2024 seminar will delve into the Dionysian revels, as shown in Euripides’ Bacchae. In this elegant and brutal play, the great tragedian unleashes a brand-new Olympian god, Dionysus, on the city of Thebes. Young, indignant, and thirsting for revenge on the Theban royal family, the god arrives in the city with an exotic troupe of foreign women dancing in tow and leads the frenzied Theban women to the mountains to celebrate his secret rites. With the city in thrall to Dionysus and his power to intoxicate, enchant, and destroy, what is Thebes’ young ruler, Pentheus, supposed to do? As the vengeful deity wreaks his havoc, even the wise prophet Tiresias seems to have fallen under the Dionysian spell, and the distinction between foolishness and wisdom is no longer easy to discern. In this carefully wrought confusion, Euripides lays bare the mysterious and fraught dynamics between the masculine and the feminine; the natural and the political; the human and the divine. As the drama unfolds, driven by the violent, erotic power of Dionysus, we bear witness as Pentheus stumbles in a daze toward the final horror that the god has arranged for the city. Bacchae delivers tragic catharsis at its finest, and we hope you’ll come experience it with us at the Homecoming 2024 seminar.
