Master of Arts in Education

The Master of Arts in Education degree consists of 30 credits for candidates with a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution and a minimum 2.5 GPA.

Requirements for the matriculation into the Department of Education and the Graduate School

Candidates for the Master of Arts Only Candidates for Initial Teacher Licensure
  1. Admission application for the Graduate School sent to the Graduate School Office
  2. Two sealed, official transcripts of all undergraduate work and any prior graduate work; submit one to the Graduate School and one to the Department of Education.
  3. Two letters of recommendation addressed to the Chair of the Department of Education-including the recommendation letter cover form-attesting to the candidate's personal and professional qualifications for graduate work sent to the Department of Education.
  4. Immunization form sent to Health Services
  5. A planned program of study developed in consultation by appointment with a faculty advisor and approved by the department chair.

Candidates for initial teacher licensure may apply to the Graduate School simultaneously with application for initial teacher licensure and may take up to six credits of teacher licensure coursework before submitting the MA Planned Program. Saint Joseph College candidates accepted for initial teacher licensure apply 15 credits of coursework from their official teacher licensure program toward the Master of Arts degree.

In addition to the materials submitted to the Department of Education for teacher licensure, candidates submit the following additional items to the Graduate School.

  1. Admission application for the Graduate School
  2. Immunization form
  3. A planned program of study developed in consultation by appointment with a faculty advisor and approved by the department chair.

 

Each Master of Arts in Education Planned Program includes:

  • Core courses: 6 credits-Educational Research and Educational Issues or Public School Law
  • Specialization area: 9 credits
  • Electives: 15 credits unless noted. (These may be drawn from the teacher licensure planned program.)
  • Comprehensive Exam-taken at the conclusion of all coursework, by application, in February (October application) or July (April application) exam. The comprehensive exam questions are designed to assess the student's ability to develop, substantiate, and defend educational decisions based on theory, research, and experience.
