Graduate Certificate in Latino Community Practice

The Latino Community Practice Graduate Certificate is the region's only specialized credential for bilingual, multicultural practice in healthcare, management, and human services.

Career Opportunities
Improve your effectiveness and distinguish your career as administrator, case manager, counselor, dietitian, educator, elder care provider, first responder, interpreter, lawyer, nurse, nutritionist, physician, probation officer, social worker, therapist, or professional in an allied field. As a Latino Community Fellow, you will:

  • Advance proficiency in your second language, Spanish or English
  • Gain knowledge and understanding of diverse Latino populations
  • Participate in a bilingual clinical internship or employment experience
  • Prepare bilingual community education materials
  • Conduct community-based research

Adult-Friendly Schedules
Complete the 18 credit program in two years by taking one or two courses per semester. Courses are scheduled to accommodate working professionals.

Substantial Fellowships
As a Latino Community Fellow, you will be eligible for a fellowship worth 30% of College tuition and fees if you commit to completing the Graduate Certificate and to performing two years or 1,000 hours of post-certificate Latino community practice in an employed or voluntary position.

Master's Degree in Management
Complete the Master of Science in Management degree in one additional calendar year. Up to 12 credits from the Latino Community Practice Graduate Certificate will apply toward the Master of Science in Management degree.

LCPR579 Advanced Spanish Composition for the Professions or
LCPR580 Advanced English Communications for the Professions

LCPR514 Latino Cultures for the Global Era

LCPR595 Bilingual Communications and Social Marketing

Includes approved internship or employment experience (250 hours)

LCPR598 Latino Community Research I

LCPR599 Latino Community Research II

Choice of one elective:
LCPR515 Latina Voices in Literature
LCPR516 Latino Cultures in Film
LCPR590 Immigrant Families and Health

Other elective as approved

ACTFL Language Proficiency Examinations
Requirements include satisfactory scores on the ACTFL oral proficiency interview (after 6 credits) and written proficiency test (after 18 credits) and a minimum grade of B- in all courses.

Admissions Requirements

  • Admission application, available at www.sjc.edu/graduate.
  • $50 application fee
  • Sealed transcript of your bachelor's degree from a regionally-accredited institution
  • Conversational proficiency in Spanish and English
  • Two letters recommending you for graduate study at Saint Joseph College
  • Admissions interview to plan your program of study
  • Language proficiency assessment
  • Signed commitment to two years or 1,000 hours of post-certificate Latino community practice
  • Record of immunization for Measles, Mumps, and Rubella, submitted to the Health Services Center office at Saint Joseph College for students born after 12/31/56.
