Nursing Graduate Program
Graduate ProgramThe Master's Program in Nursing at Saint Joseph College with its strong humanistic and clinical focus was first offered in 1985. The first class of Psychiatric/Mental Health Clinical Nurse Specialists graduated in 1988. Subsequently, two programs have been added: Family Nurse Practitioner and, most recently, Nurse Educator. Additionally, in keeping with professional changes, the Psychiatric/Mental Health Clinical Nurse Specialist program has evolved to be a nurse practitioner program.
With a philosophy based on caring, the Master's program has retained its humanities and clinical orientation and includes a high level of scholarship when most other nursing Master's programs have followed the current curricular trend that emphasizes the biomedical and technological aspects of nursing. Graduates from the Master's program emerge as independent practitioners with a greatly expanded understanding of the world of patients and their families.
Currently the director is Pamela Aselton, Ph.D., APRN-BC, paselton@sjc.edu .
Students who enter the Master's Program in Advanced Nursing must be Registered Nurses with baccalaureate degrees in nursing. Candidates apply to the program to prepare as Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing Practitioners, Family Nurse Practitioners or Nurse Educators. Students complete several core courses and then design their plan of study according to their specialty and personal interests. (Application for matriculation is described in the graduate catalog (PDF: 195pp., 3.4M).
There are postmasters certificate options for nurses with a M.S. degree who wish further preparation in one of our specialties.
