Biology: Bachelor of Science
Are you interested in medical research, public health, the study of the environment, or the preservation of forests and wildlife? As these fields of study assume a higher national and international priority, the need for highly skilled biologists is escalating. It has been said that the 21st century will be the "Age of Biotechnology" as new technologies are developed and marketed to deliver life-saving techniques, agricultural products, cost effective energy, and a cleaner environment. Our students gain competency in their area of interest through our robust curriculum, diverse faculty mentors, internships, research experience, and leadership opportunities.

Curriculum: Our outstanding curriculum offers courses in the fields of ecology, biotechnology, genetics, immunology, microbiology, zoology, botany, and more! As a Biology major, you will have numerous opportunities to engage in firsthand research and work alongside professional scientists. Those students that qualify can move through our Accelerated Masters of Science program, participate in our pre-pharmacy program or move right into a physical therapy doctoral program.
Faculty: The Saint Joseph College Biology Department is composed of professors from a wide variety of backgrounds. Our faculty members include an ornithologist, an aquatic ecologist, a cardiologist, a neuroscientist, a pharmacologist, a microbiologist and a geneticist. Many of our faculty have on-going research programs and have published their research findings in international journals. Meet our Faculty!
Internships: SJC Biology students recently participated in internships at the Connecticut Forensic Science Laboratory, Pfizer Laboratories, the University of Connecticut Health Center and Medical School, and Brookhaven National Laboratories.
Research: Students begin their college career at SJC with a research experiment their first semester in Biol 117: Introduction to Evolution and Ecology. Understanding research, writing proposals and reports, presenting research information to others are all components that are threaded throughout our curriculum so that as a culminating project those students that qualify can do a research project for their senior presentation.
State-of-the-art laboratories: Among the College's eight science laboratories is the newly refurbished Biology lab, home of the Freshwater Institute. Equipped with an indoor riffle tank, the lab is designed to enhance the research and learning opportunities for both the College and professional communities. All campus laboratories contain equipment that is similar or superior to professional laboratories, including fluorescent and phase-control microscopes, cell culture facilities, protein and nucleic acid gel apparati and gene cyclers.
Leadership: SJC hosts the chapter, Rho Zeta, of the Beta Beta Beta National Biological Honor Society for students dedicated to improving the understanding and appreciation of biological study and extending boundaries of human knowledge through scientific research. Questions? E-mail tribeta@sjc.edu.
