Teacher Licensure: Undergraduate Level

Saint Joseph College offers accredited Connecticut State Department of Education approved programs leading to professional licensure at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Undergraduate students who seek teacher licensure work with their advisor in the Advisement Center as freshmen to create an overall plan of study, including courses for teacher licensure. During the spring of the freshman year, prospective teacher candidates meet with the Department of Education Certification Officer and the Education Department Chair in a Student Orientation Seminar (SOS). In the fall of the sophomore year, applicants finalize their admission into the Department of Education by completing all acceptance requirements (see below). Transfer students will work initially with the Advisement Center as well.

Criteria for Acceptance into the Department of Education

  1. Minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.67.
  2. Successful results on Praxis I-Reading, Writing, Mathematics or Praxis I waiver.
  3. Successful scores on a personal essay describing the reasons for becoming a teacher.
  4. Successful interview with a faculty team.
  5. Two letters of reference from a professional source.
  6. Completion of a background check statement.
  7. Development of a planned licensure program with an education faculty advisor assigned by the Education Department.

Prospective teacher candidates take selected pre-professional courses, but may take only three education courses before admission to the Department. The Advisement Office will identify these courses in the planned licensure program of study.
