Agnes B. Curry, Ph.D.

Dr. Agnes Curry studied philosophy after her experiences as a musician made her wonder why people find things like music so important, and how art conveys meaning. "One goes into philosophy for complex reasons. But on a personal level, it's because there is an unsatisfied question there."

Philosophy: Bachelor of Arts

Embark on a journey of limitless discovery as a Philosophy major. Examine the fundamental views of humanity including humankind's beliefs and practices in the areas of art, science, morality and religion. The Saint Joseph College department of Philosophy offers a curriculum that will develop your critical thinking skills and enhance your perspective on the world.

As a Philosophy major you will benefit from an outstanding curriculum. A strong academic foundation is developed through introductory courses like Logic and Problems of Philosophy. Next, you will pursue specialized courses like Philosophy of Love, Existentialism, Contemporary Ethical Problems, Modern Philosophers, Women Philosophers, and more. Many students choose to combine a major in Philosophy with a major in another discipline. Popular double majors include Philosophy/English, Philosophy/Psychology and Philosophy/Education.

Independent Studies
Your options are wide open to devise a course of study tailored to your interests. You and your academic advisor will create an independent course of study. Recent student-proposed fields of study have included Nietzsche, Hegel, The Problem of God and The Philosophy of Simone de Beauvoir. Independent studies can also evolve into internship opportunities.

Each year, Philosophy majors attend regional professional Philosophy conferences. In the last three years, the SJC Philosophy department went to conferences at Bates College, Providence College, and University of Rochester.
