Blue Jays begin with win

WEST HARTFORD, Conn., Sept. 1, 2010 -- Saint Joseph College senior Eva Peart (Bloomfield, Conn.) had a goal and an assist as the Blue Jays defeated Coast Guard 2-0 Wednesday at home.

Both teams were playing their season openers. It was the first-ever win for Saint Joseph against Coast Guard, which had won all four previous meetings.

Saint Joseph outshot Coast Guard, 15-4 in the first half, but it ended scoreless. The Blue Jays broke through 1 minute, 10 seconds into the second half on a goal by junior Stacey Rutledge (Meriden, Conn). Peart made a diagonal pass through to Rutledge 35 yards out and Rutledge carried the ball to about 12 yards out and scored.

Peart scored the other goal in the 59th minute after a goalmouth scramble.

"To start the season with a win against a team we hadn't beaten before is a good way to come out of the pre-season," Saint Joseph coach Chris Legates said. "We've seen what we need to do better and we'll move forward, trying to improve those things."

For Coast Guard, junior goaltender Mary Mills (St. Louis, Miss.) made 16 saves. For Saint Joseph, junior Holly Mirabella (Seymour, Conn.) made five saves for her second shutout in two career starts. The Blue Jays outshot Conn, 22-7.

Saint Joseph hosts Manhattanville, Sat. Sept. 4 at 1 p.m.
