Saint Joseph College Art Gallery

“One of the liveliest campus museums in the state”  – The New York Times

♦  Mission Statement   ♦

The mission of the Saint Joseph College Art Gallery is to inspire, instruct, challenge, encourage inquiry, and promote scholarship through the development and preservation of the permanent collection as well as through research, exhibitions, and programs. The Art Gallery will be a resource for teaching and lifelong learning; it will deepen the understanding of visual art from diverse cultures, stimulate creative endeavors, and enrich the lives of students, the college community, and the general public.

With a permanent collection of over 2,000 objects and six to eight changing exhibitions throughout the year, the Saint Joseph College Art Gallery is a wonderful resource for students, a nice change of venue for faculty, a restful escape for staff, and a great place for everyone to bring friends and family!

◊  View art for your enjoyment

The Saint Joseph College Art Gallery presents six to eight exhibitions per year. Installations of the permanent collection change regularly. The Art Gallery also presents a variety of temporary loan exhibitions of historical, modern, or contemporary works, many of which bring to campus art that is not represented in the collection.

Everyone is encouraged to attend exhibition opening receptions where they can chat with artists, collectors, and scholars.

◊  Find a topic for a paper  ◊

Our helpful staff will assist you in viewing works that are not currently on display in the exhibition galleries. The Dr. Vincent J. and Gloria Marcello Turco ’45 Print Study Room allows students easy access to our collection of works of art on paper.

◊  Get inspired   ◊

The Art Gallery is an excellent resource for students of all ages, disciplines, and backgrounds. If you need inspiration for a homework assignment or a subject for a group project, or a muse for a work of poetry we are an excellent place to start.

A wide variety of classes use the Art Gallery, including psychology, education, art history, history, art therapy, international studies, foreign languages, religion, philosophy, poetry, and studio art.

◊  Learn about cultures or historical periods   ◊

Our permanent collection consists of over 2,000 works of art with particular strength in American paintings of the early 20th century, including works by Thomas Hart Benton, Georgia O'Keeffe, and Milton Avery, as well as Japanese, European and American prints from the 15th century to the present, including works by Albrecht Dürer, Rembrandt, Hiroshige, Thomas Nast, George Bellows, and Childe Hassam.

◊  Explore career possibilities   ◊

The Art Gallery provides internships, work study, and volunteer opportunities. Students and volunteers assist in organizing exhibitions and managing the permanent collection. In addition, the Art Gallery offers the SAGE program (Student Art Gallery Educators), which trains students to give tours of the Art Gallery's permanent collection and special exhibitions to adults and children.
