Q:  What about Email?
A: All students are provided with an email account, accessible on and off campus. Since the email is the common communication platform for campus offices and professors, students are required to check their emails regularly.

Q: Is there a computer requirement?
A: SJC students are not required to bring a computer to campus, although the Information Technology Department encourages all incoming freshman and transfer students to have their own computers. With wireless internet access available in residence halls, academic and administrative buildings, a notebook computer will give you the freedom have online access in many locations. Students who do not to bring a personal computer will have access to over 100 public use computers located in McDonough Hall and McGovern Hall.

While SJC does not have a requirement to have any particular computer, the following notes will help you prepare for bringing a computer to campus:
  • The SJC IT department no longer supports network access for computers running Windows 98, Windows ME, or Mac OS 9 and earlier.
  • Students are responsible for providing their own software.
  • Make sure you have up-to-date antivirus software installed for your PC or the latest security patches for your Mac.

Q: Where are the computer labs located?
A:
The 5 computer labs can be found in the lower level of McDonough Hall.  Additional computers are located in McGovern Lounge and the Library.  Overall on campus, there are over 100 available computers for student use.

Q: What's the Help Desk?
A: The Help Desk provides level 1 technical support to students by phone at extension 5310. The Help Desk is located in the Network Center in the lower level of McDonough Hall. Walk in help is also available.

Q:  What is Blackboard?
A: Blackboard is a web-based learning management system that is used for assignments, grades and announcements. Saint Joseph College classes take advantage of the Blackboard learning management system by using asynchronous communications, collaboration among students and faculty in both organized and impromptu sessions, virtual classrooms and shared network whiteboard spaces. Most of your classes will require you to use this system as a collaboration portal and to submit your papers.

Q: Do I get my own network storage space?
A: Each student will be allocated up to 100 MB of storage space on the campus network. This virtual hard drive can be accessed via the campus network.

Q: If my computer/laptop breaks or malfunctions in any way, can the network center fix it?
A:
The network center staff do not repair any personal computers/laptops. The network center is able to help with network/internet connections from personally-owned computers.
