Arts Integration and Multiple Intelligences (AIMI) Program
The Arts Integration through Multiple Intelligences (AIMI) Project provides an opportunity for teachers and teacher candidates at both the graduate and undergraduate levels to learn differentiated instructional approaches through the arts. Through Multiple Intelligence Theory and the use of arts integration strategies, educators and future educators develop units and lessons that incorporate the visual and performing arts across the curriculum. Using the resources of the local community such as the Hartford Dance Conservatory, the Saint Joseph College Art Gallery, and the internationally known National Dance Institute of New York City, Saint Joseph College students also experience first hand the concepts and strategies that they are learning in their coursework.
In addition to coursework, the AIMI Project involves children from local urban and suburban schools who learn dance and movement in coursework and in a performance with teachers from the National Dance Institute of New York City. The four-week summer program culminates in a professional grade dance production, unique in that it teaches adult students alongside children.
2009 Summer Programs
The summer 2009 AIMI Project includes two sessions for children in grades 3-8. Both sessions are staffed by SJC faculty and staff, certified teachers, and professional performers/artists. Session I runs June 29 - July 10. It includes courses in theater, dance, adventure training, jazz band, piano, guitar and the visual arts. The cost is $400. Session II runs from July 13 - July 29. It focuses on dance taught by Jacques d'Amboise and the National Dance Institute staff. The cost is $500. Scholarships are available for both sessions.
