Saint Joseph College AIMI summer program

Arts Integration through Multiple Intelligences Project (AIMI)

The Arts Integration through Multiple Intelligences (AIMI) Project provides an opportunity for teachers and teacher candidates at both the graduate and undergraduate levels to learn differentiated instructional approaches through the arts. Through Multiple Intelligence Theory and the use of arts integration strategies, educators and future educators develop units and lessons that incorporate the visual and performing arts across the curriculum. Using the resources of the local community such as the Hartford Dance Conservatory, the Saint Joseph College Art Gallery, and the internationally known National Dance Institute of New York City, Saint Joseph College students also experience first hand the concepts and strategies that they are learning in their coursework.

With substantial research emphasizing the significance of the arts in promoting the success of lower achieving students, the AIMI Project reflects Saint Joseph College's commitment to lower the achievement gap in Connecticut. Director, Dr. Susan Johns of the Saint Joseph College School of Education, initiated the AIMI Project as a result of a $750,000 federal grant to support an arts integration partnership project with Woodrow Wilson Middle School in Middletown, CT. As a result of the grant, the AIMI Project developed a collaborative partnership among the National Dance Institute of New York City and its founder, Jacques d'Amboise, the Education Department faculty and staff, the staff of the Autorino Center, and the faculty in the Fine Arts Department at Saint Joseph College.

In addition to coursework, the AIMI Project involves children from local urban and suburban schools who learn dance and movement in coursework and in a performance with teachers from the National Dance Institute of New York City. The four-week summer program culminates in a professional grade dance production, unique in that it teaches adult students alongside children.
