The Graduate Institute is a tight-knit and vibrant community with many opportunities for social events outside of the classroom. Students earning the MALA spend four semesters studying in four of five available segments: Politics and Society, History, Philosophy and Theology, Literature, and Mathematics and Natural Science. All classes comprise 20 or fewer students and at the heart of the curriculum is the seminar, where students engage in discussion initiated by a tutor’s opening question about the assigned reading. From Homer to Hannah Arendt, the famous St. John’s seminar spans 3,000 years of human thought.

The 36-acre Annapolis campus is in the heart of the historic capital of Maryland overlooking College Creek and close to the Chesapeake Bay. Annapolis is within 30 miles of Washington, DC, and Baltimore.
