Provided by trained professionals, psychotherapy involves examining and gaining insight into difficulties faced by individuals. Psychotherapy has been shown to have many benefits for individuals who undertake it. It often leads to a significant reduction in feelings of distress, increased satisfaction in interpersonal relationships, greater personal awareness, increased skills for managing stress, and resolutions to specific problems; however, there are no guarantees about what will happen. Psychotherapy requires an active effort on your part. In order to be most successful, you will have to work on things discussed during therapy outside of your sessions.
The first session will last approximately 60 minutes and will involve a comprehensive intake evaluation of your needs. By the end of the evaluation, the clinician will be able to offer some initial diagnostic impressions and discuss what services may be most appropriate for you (e.g., individual therapy, group therapy, psychiatric evaluation/medication management). Ongoing counseling appointments are typically scheduled weekly or every other week for 45 minutes each, but frequency—as well as duration of psychotherapy treatment—may vary based on your specific needs. Through counseling, we will discuss your treatment goals and collaboratively develop a treatment plan to work through together.
