You might find that you can make a larger gift through appreciated stocks and other securities than you can with a gift of cash. If you donate shares that you have owned for more than one year, you will generally receive a tax deduction equal to the fair market value of the securities, while you also avoid capital gains tax.

Instructions for Stock Transfers
To initiate a transfer of securities held by a brokerage firm or commercial bank, please notify your broker or bank that you intend to transfer securities to the college. This can often be done online.

IMPORTANT: Please contact the Collegewide Development Office when you intend to transfer securities, so that we might complete the sale and credit you properly for your gift. Stock Valuation for Donors: Donors may choose one of several methods to value their stock gift for IRS tax purposes. Please consult with your tax advisor.

Stock Valuation for St. John’s College: The Business Office calculates the value of the gift on the date that the stock is transferred to the college. The gift is valued for recognition purposes at the midpoint between the high and low stock market price on that date.
