Exhibition runs July 21-October 1, 2023, and is free and open to the public

ANNAPOLIS, Md. [July 18, 2023] – St. John’s College is proud to present the highly anticipated exhibition, “José Guadalupe Posada: Legendary Printmaker of Mexico,” from July 21 to October 1, 2023, at the Mitchell Art Museum. This showcase offers a rare opportunity to explore the extensive body of work by José Guadalupe Posada (1852–1913), an iconic Mexican artist and satirist known for his evocative prints and illustrations that demand audiences to ask, “Is this art?”

This exhibition features an impressive collection of Posada’s artwork, which comprises approximately 20,000 images, often unsigned. His notable pieces include calaveras, skeleton figures that gained popularity through Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) festivities, satirical caricatures of politicians, and social commentary on the changing cultural landscape of Mexico during the early years of the Mexican Revolution. Posada’s work was a bold critique of injustice, technological progress, and the cultural influence of Europe on Mexico’s middle and upper classes.

“Posada’s audience wasn’t the literati, the bookish, or the elite, it was the working poor or lower-middle class,” notes Peter Nesbett, the Elizabeth Myers Mitchell Art Museum’s director. “Still, his art poses lofty questions about the role of the artist in society—as a social critic, provocateur, satirist, or gadfly.”

Set against the backdrop of St. John’s College—renowned for its all-required curriculum in which students probe revolutionary texts from across 3,000 years of human thought—the exhibition invites contemplation of the kind of persistent questions asked at St. John’s: First, must one be serious to be taken seriously (and can satire and comedy produce change)? Second, what are the bounds of art (and how do objects acquire artistic value)?

To mark the opening of the exhibition, the museum is offering a free lecture, “The Legacy of Posada: From the Revolution to the Present” on Friday, July 21, from 4 to 4:45 p.m., followed by an opening of the exhibition and a summer picnic from 5 to 8 p.m. These events will take place at the Mitchell Art Museum, located at 60 College Avenue, Annapolis, Md. The picnic will include lemonade, desserts, and live entertainment featuring ballads by New York-based artist Pablo Helguera. Attendees are encouraged to bring a blanket and meal (picnic baskets optional) and to RSVP at mitchellartmuseum(at)sjc.edu. Visiting the Museum: During the summer, the museum is open Fridays through Sundays, 1-6 p.m., and Mondays, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Exhibitions are always free and wheelchair accessible. Parking is available on weekends in the Calvert Street Garage (one block away), at 19 St. John’s Street, and during the week at the Gott’s Court Garage (two-and-a-half blocks away) at 25 Calvert Street.

El Museo de Arte Mitchell de St. John’s College inaugura una exposición sobre el legendario grabador mexicano José Guadalupe Posada. La exposición se realizará desde el 21 de julio hasta el 1 de octubre de 2023 y es gratuita y abierta al público

ANNAPOLIS, Md. [18 de julio de 2023] – St. John’s College se enorgullece de presentar la muy esperada exposición, “José Guadalupe Posada: Legendary Printmaker of Mexico”(José Guadalupe Posada: el legendario grabador de México), desde el 21 de julio al 1 de octubre de 2023 en el Museo de Arte Mitchell. Esta muestra ofrece una oportunidad única de explorar la extensa obra de José Guadalupe Posada (1852-1913), icónico artista e ilustrador satírico mexicano conocido por sus evocadores grabados e ilustraciones que obligan al público a preguntarse: “¿Es esto arte?”

Esta exposición presenta una impresionante colección deobras de arte de Posada , que comprende aproximadamente 20,000 imágenes, a menudo sin firmar. Sus notables piezas incluyen calaveras, figuras esqueléticas que ganaron popularidad en las festividades del Día de los Muertos, caricaturas satíricas de políticos y comentarios sociales sobre el cambiante panorama cultural de México durante los primeros años de la Revolución Mexicana. La obra de Posada fue una audaz crítica de la injusticia, el progreso tecnológico y la influencia cultural de Europa en las clases media y alta de México.

Con motivo de la inauguración de la exposición, el museo ofrece una conferencia gratuita, “The Legacy of Posada: From the Revolution to the Present” (El legado de Posada: de la revolución al presente), el viernes 21 de julio de 4 a 4:45 p. m., seguido de la inauguración de la exposición y un picnic de verano de 5 a 8 p. m. Estos eventos tendrán lugar en el Museo de Arte Mitchell, situado en 60 College Avenue, Annapolis, Md.
