2024 Schedule of Events Coming Soon!

The schedule for Family Weekend changes every year. To see what activities are typically offered, please see last year’s schedule. We will post this year’s schedule early in the fall.

Friday

  • 2–5 p.m. – Check-In: Pick-up your printed schedule and nametags in the newly renovated Mellon Hall Lobby.
  • 3–4:15 p.m. – Library Open House: Want to see where students spend much of their time? Tour the beautiful Greenfield Library and hear from library staff about the many resources available to your student. While you are there, be sure to check-out the Rare Book Room and learn more about these historical books! The library is also open on Saturday from 12–6 p.m. if you would like to wander around on your own.
  • 4–5:15 p.m. — Community Welcome Reception: Families, friends, and students are invited to join staff and tutors on the Mellon Patio for an informal conversation. Light refreshments will be served.
  • 7 p.m. — First-Year Chorus Concert, Mellon Hall FSK Auditorium: Parents are invited to hear selections from the First-Year Chorus.
  • 7:30 p.m. — Friday Night Lecture & Question Period, Mellon Hall FSK Auditorium: “What the heck is hell? Divine judgment in the Gospel of Matthew” delivered by Ron Haflidson, St. John’s College Tutor.

Saturday

  • 9–11:30 a.m. — Check-In: Pick-up your printed schedule and nametags in the newly renovated Mellon Hall Lobby.
  • 9:30—10:30 a.m. — President’s Welcome: Join President Demleitner in the Mellon Hall FSK Auditorium for an update on the current state and future of St. John’s College. This session will include a brief question and answer period.
  • 10:45 a.m.—12 p.m. — Student and Alumni Panel: Join current students, recent alumni, and internship site supervisors in the Mellon Hall FSK Auditorium and hear about how Johnnies take advantage of the Hodson Internship and Summer Pathways opportunities available to all students.
  • 1:30—3 p.m. — Student-led Seminars: Experience seminar, which many students consider the heart of the St. John’s Program. All seminars will discuss the same reading; families and friends are welcome to joins us in any of the following Mellon Hall classrooms: 101, 103, 104, 106, 132, 134, 141, 144. Once at capacity, room doors will be closed, and “Room Full” sign will be posted on the door.
  • 1:30—3 p.m. — Magnolia Observation & Drawing Practicum: Taken from the first-year laboratory, experience this interesting St John’s-style science practicum in the Mellon Hall Courtyard.
  • 3—4:30 p.m. — Family & Friends Fall Festival: Enjoy a variety of fall-themed food and beverages on the Mellon Patio and Upper Lawn, paint a pumpkin to take home with you, play lawn games, and cheer on your student as they participate in a pie tasting contest.
  • 8—11 p.m. — Contra Dance: Please join our very own Ms. Jordan Kammeyer, the archon of Folk Life, in the Great Hall of McDowell where she will teach everyone the steps and call the dance. First-time dancers of all ages are very much encouraged to attend. Charcuterie and refreshments provided.

Sunday

  • 11 a.m.—1:30 p.m. — Family & Friends Brunch: Join your student for Sunday Brunch in the neo-classical Edgar T. Higgins Dining Hall located on the quad in Fielding-Rumore Hall. Seating is limited and reservations are required. $20/person (details available upon request when registering)
  • 6:45—8 p.m. — Great Conversations Event in the Mellon Hall FSK Auditorium: Join us for a Great Conversation between Bob Woodward, renowned investigative journalist and Pulitzer Prize-winning author, and Governor Wes Moore, Maryland’s first Black governor and bestselling author. Tickets are required for entry.
