July 21–27, 2024 | Santa Fe, NM
Love and friendship seem essential to our existence. No human being would choose to be without them, and our happiness seems importantly to depend upon them. We will take time this week to reflect upon these vital relationships that move the human soul and bind us together. What makes a good friendship? Why are our friends our friends? What are we looking for in love? What is the relationship between love and human goodness? Does friendship require virtue? Readings will include Jane Austen’s masterpiece, Pride and Prejudice; Aristotle’s reflections on friendship in the Nicomachean Ethics; sonnets on love by Shakespeare and others; and Aristophanes’ dramatic account of love in Plato’s Symposium.
Readings include Pride and Prejudice, Nicomachean Ethics, Shakespeare’s sonnets, and more
